Three graduating seniors from the 2016-17 Minnesota Duluth women’s hockey team will now be rivals in 2017-18 in Sweden.
Forwards Maria Lindh and Lara Stalder and defenseman Sidney Morin all signed professional contracts over the past few months with teams in the Swedish Women’s Hockey League (SDHL). Lindh, a native of Sweden, signed with Djurgardens; Stalder, of Switzerland, joined Linkoping; and Morin, of Minnetonka, Minn., inked a deal with MODO.
Lindh had a year of NCAA eligibility left, but graduated in May and decided not to return to UMD. She is battling for a spot on the Swedish Olympic team, and would have missed a significant portion of the season had she made it.
Stalder is a lock for the Swiss Olympic team after wrapping up her Bulldogs career by being named a first-team All-American and top-three finalist for the Patty Kazmaier Award. Morin, the WCHA Defensive Player of the Year, fell just short of making the 2017-18 U.S. Women’s National Team leading up to the 2018 Olympics.
Three other former Bulldogs are also playing in the SDHL. Michela Cava (2014-16) recently signed with MODO while Pernilla Winberg (08-13) and Jenni Asserholt (08-09) — both from Sweden — are in the league.
