A Look At How UMD’s Early Departures Have Fared In NHL Since 2007

Via UMD Sports Information, 15 players since 2007 have left Minnesota Duluth to turn pro with NCAA eligibility remaining. Here is the list of 15 and how 13 of those players have fared at the professional level since leaving the Bulldogs early.

2007

Mason Raymond, sophomore forward — Signed with Vancouver after two seasons at UMD. He played in 609 NHL games over 10 seasons with Vancouver (6), Toronto (1), Calgary (2) and Anaheim (1). He’s appears to now be out of pro hockey after getting released by Anaheim in November, having played just four games.

Matt Niskanen, sophomore defenseman — Signed with Dallas after two seasons at UMD. He’s played in 823 NHL games and counting over 10 seasons with Dallas (3.5), Pittsburgh (3.5) and Washington (3). He’s in the third year of a seven-year, $40.25 million contract with Washington.

2008

Jason Garrison, junior defenseman — Signed with Florida after three seasons at UMD. He’s played in 578 NHL games over nine seasons with Florida (4), Vancouver (2) and Tampa Bay (3). He’s in the fifth-year of a six-year, $27.6 million contract with Tampa Bay.

2009

Evan Oberg, sophomore defenseman — Signed with Vancouver after two seasons with UMD. He played in just seven NHL games over three seasons with Vancouver and Tampa Bay. He played in 365 AHL games over six seasons with seven teams. He’s spent the last two seasons in Europe.

Alex Stalock, junior goaltender — Signed with San Jose after three seasons with UMD. He’s played in 67 NHL games over six NHL seasons with San Jose and Minnesota, as a backup with both teams. He’s played in 140 AHL games in five seasons with four teams. He starts a two-year, $1.3 million deal next year with Minnesota.

2010

Rob Bordson, junior forward — Signed with Anaheim after three seasons at UMD. He’s played in 0 NHL games over seven professional seasons. He played in 382 AHL games over six seasons with six teams. He spent last season in Europe.

Dylan Olsen, sophomore defenseman — Signed with Chicago after one and a half seasons at UMD. He played in 125 NHL games over four seasons with Chicago and Florida. He played in 221 AHL games over six seasons with three teams. He’s currently out of pro hockey.

2011

Mike Connolly, junior forward — Signed with San Jose after three seasons at UMD. He played in two NHL games one year with Colorado. He played in 118 AHL games over two seasons with two teams. He’s now in his fourth season in Europe.

Justin Faulk, freshman defenseman — Signed with Carolina after one season at UMD. He’s played in 401 NHL games over six seasons with Carolina. He’s currently in the third year of a six-year, $29 million deal with Carolina.

2012

J.T. Brown, sophomore forward — Signed with Tampa Bay after two seasons at UMD. He’s played in 299 NHL games over five seasons with Tampa Bay. He’s in the first year of a two-year, $2.5 million deal that expires after next season.

2013

Chris Casto, sophomore defenseman — Signed with Boston after two seasons at UMD. He’s played on 0 NHL games in four full professional seasons. He’s played in 269 AHL games and counting over five seasons with Providence, which is still alive in the AHL playoffs.

2014

Caleb Herbert, junior forward — Signed with Washington after three seasons at UMD. He’s played in 0 NHL games in three full professional seasons. He’s played in 80 AHL games over four seasons with two teams.

2016

Kasimir Kaskisuo, sophomore goaltender — Signed with Toronto after two seasons at UMD. Spent his first full professional season playing 32 games for Orlando in the ECHL and 10 games and counting so far at the end of the season with the Toronto Marlies in the AHL. His entry level contract with Toronto expires after next season. The Marlies are also alive in the AHL playoffs. They went with Kaskisuo in three games thus far.

2017

Hunter Miska, freshman goaltender — Signed with Arizona in April after one season at UMD. His entry level deal begins next season and runs through the 2018-19 season.

Neal Pionk, sophomore defenseman — Signed with New York Rangers in May after two season at UMD. His entry level deal begins next season and runs through the 2018-19 season.
